The not-so-distant history of Coronado is full of surprises. A case in point is one of the programs that heralded Coronado’s School of the Arts (COSA). For seventeen years, from the late sixties to the early eighties, the award-winning Coronado High School Marching Band and Drill Team enhanced Coronado parades and other community events, even performing as far as L.A. and beyond. Although small in numbers, they won numerous awards, including both Regional and State accolades. Ted Thompson remembers, “We always lacked for numbers, but we made up for it in talent!”

On January 25th a ‘Hops and History’ gathering at the Coronado Historical Association will celebrate the CHS Marching Band’s history with a panel discussion led by former member, Pastor Eric Smith. Eric recently credited all the band’s success during that bygone era to the “…dynamic expression of community, inspired through the charisma of Bob Demmon.”

Cindy Sanger, a former CHS marching band member, captured the magic from those days when she recently said, “We chanted, ‘We're Number One,’ but the truth is we were One. As we played or marched together, traveled and socialized, we found that this group of geeks had become a unit. We cared about and for one another.”

Robert Oder, Cindy Sanger, Ted Thompson, and others will join Eric to help recall and understand this key aspect of Coronado’s history. The bond that Bob Demmon developed some fifty years ago seems to continue for Cindy and many members of the Marching Islanders, “…it is a shared devotion to being One.”

All are invited to enjoy some craft beer and be inspired by Islander history at ‘Hops and History’ at 5:30 PM at the Coronado Historical Association. Price for CHA members and Marching Band and Drill Team members is $10, all others, $15. Beer and light snacks are included in the price.
