Local historian Doug Mengers will discuss Coronado’s historic streetcars, from the 1880s through the 1940s. Public transit in San Diego began with Coronado’s horse-drawn streetcars, introduced by Babcock and Story in 1886. John D. Spreckels’ San Diego Electric Railway converted and expanded the system, eventually connecting the Hotel Del, Tent City, and the ferry landing to the wider San Diego network. The trolley system in Coronado was abandoned in favor of buses in 1947. Many of the photographs in the presentation and his book, Images of Rail: San Diego Trolleys, are from the research collections of the Coronado Historical Association.
